{"id":104,"date":"2019-02-13T16:44:50","date_gmt":"2019-02-13T15:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/interkat.com\/?page_id=104"},"modified":"2019-09-26T10:52:13","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T08:52:13","slug":"particulate-filters","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/interkat.com\/en\/technologies\/particulate-filters\/","title":{"rendered":"Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Catalytic coated particulate filters<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the\nmost urgent goals of environmental policy \u2013 in addition to the reduction of environmentally\nharmful gaseous compounds \u2013 is the global reduction of particulate matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soot particulates are emitted especially during combustion processes in diesel engines as well as the combustion of heavy fuel oils as in marine applications. The aim is to reduce the particulate mass (PM) but also the particulate number (PN) to avoid risks for the human health. A particulate filter removes particulate matter like soot or other unburned hydrocarbons (HC) from the exhaust gas by physical filtration or oxidation. The most efficient type is the so-called wall-flow filter. These substrates are similar to honeycomb structured substrates for common emission catalysts but blocked at alternative ends.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore,\nthe exhaust gas is forced to pass the porous walls between the channels and the\nparticulate matter is deposited on the walls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since a continuous\nstream of soot would block the filter after a certain time, the filter has to\nbe regenerated by burning off the filtered soot. Depending on the application\nand the regeneration strategy, the filter substrates are coated with specific\ncatalytically active components in order to reduce the needed burn-off\ntemperature or accelerate the oxidation of the filtered soot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the\npores of the filter are blocked, the backpressure of the exhaust system increases,\nand it has to be regenerated. This can be realized by a continuous process\n(passive regeneration) where nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>) is generated using\nnitrogen oxide (NO) from the exhaust gas in order to oxidize the soot. This\nmethod is called continuously regeneration trap (CRT\u00ae) and requires a minimum\ntemperature of approximately 270 \u00b0C and a specific nitrogen oxide to soot\nratio. If the exhaust gas conditions are not suitable for a passive regeneration\nsystem, an active regeneration can be performed, in which the temperature is\nraised above 450 \u00b0C (coated DPF) in order to burn off the soot in the presence\nof oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a\nnon-catalyzed filter, the soot oxidation will only start above 600 \u00b0C and will\ntake a longer time compared to the coated type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition\nto the regeneration capabilities, backpressure and catalyst activity are key\nissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>INTERKAT is\nusing a nanotechnology-based method for the coating of the filters. This always\nleads to highly active and homogeneous catalytic coating and a significantly\nlower pressure drop compared to standard coatings with washcoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>INTERKAT\nalso developed precious metal free coatings for filters which could be tailored\nfor low regeneration temperature or high sulphur tolerance.
