Three-way\ncatalytic converters are effective in preventing air pollution from\nstoichiometric engines fueled by natural gas, propane or gasoline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this\ncase, the oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) as well as\nthe reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOX<\/sub>) occur simultaneously to form\nthe harmless products; carbon dioxide (CO2<\/sub>), water (H2<\/sub>O)\nand nitrogen (N2<\/sub>). The reaction conditions, and in particular the\nair to fuel (A\/F) ratio, determine the efficiency of the conversion. The\ncatalyst functions most efficiently when the engine runs slightly below the\nstoichiometric A\/F ratio (\u03bb = 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
